Musik yang indah itu relatif. melodius, teduh, lembut. itu indah. berisik, rusuh, hingar bingar, liar, itu indah. bising dan membuat kuping berdenging, itu indah juga. Ini soal selera, lucu kalau diperdebatkan. Tentang musik yang bising ini, bukan tentang gitar yang dicolok ke ampli dengan efek distrosi lalu disetel dengan volume maksimal. bukan seperti itu. musik bising ini menuntut sang musisi untuk membangun alur dalam lagu. alur yang nantinya menuju sebuah klimaks, lalu sehabis klimaks, tensinya diturunkan lagi. asiknya mendengarkan musik bising ini disitu, menikmati alur yang dibangun, menanti kapan klimaksnya tiba. beberapa pihak menyebut gaya musik seperti ini sebagai post-rock. Memakai instrumen seperti musik rock, tapi harmoni, melodi, Rhythm, dan progresi kord yang dibangun melenceng dari tradisi musik rock. kebanyakan dari post-rock merupakan karya musik instrumental. Tapi post-rock tidak melulu bising.



Adalah Mogwai, band asal Skotlandia yang memainkan musik instrumental rock. Ditahun 1997 mereka merilis album. Dengan gaya bermusik yang kini disebut post-rock. Musik yang bertekstur, memiliki alur dari suara yang hening meluncur ke suara yang luar biasa bising. kebisingan yang dibangun seperti agresi yang memuncak. seperti kepusingan yang merambat pelan menuju ubun ubun. Gaya bermusik ini lalu diadaptasi oleh banyak band, seperti Explosions in the Sky, Do Make Say Think, Pelican, Sigur ros, Mono (Japan), dan banyak lagi. Selain Mogwai, band yang stylenya diadaptasi oleh band-band post-rock adalah Godspeed You! Black Emperor, dan Tortoise.

Jauh sebelum era Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, dan Tortoise ini, ada beberapa nama yang disebut sebut sebagai cikal bakal post-rock. Para pionir itu adalah Slint, Talk Talk, dan Bark Psychosis. Tentang Bark Psychosis, dialah elemen yang penting bagi perkembangan genre post-rock. bahkan term "post-rock" pun berasal dari review sebuah majalah terhadap album Bark Psychosis, yang berjudul Hex, tahun 1994.

Banyak yang menganggap musik jenis post-rock ini sebagai musik yang galau. anggapan yang sah sah saja. karena musiknya memang cocok didengarkan dengan headset, didengarkan sambil melamun sendirian. Tapi memberi cap Galau pada semua musik post-rock rasanya kurang tepat. Musik post-rock ini dapat diintrepetasi lebih luas lagi. Post-rock merupakan kerabat dekat dari musik eksperimental. Dia mirip dengan free jazz. sebuah movement musik modern. Emosi yang dibangun bisa beragam. Sekali lagi, mengaitkan post-rock dengan galau sah sah saja, sepanjang tidak latah.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a Canadian post-rock band which originated from Montreal, Quebec in 1994. The band is perhaps best known for their lengthy instrumental songs and large membership. Studio albums typically contain no more than five songs, and often omit the band's name and track titles from the cover and artwork.

Tortoise is an influential post-rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1990. Tortoise's almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, and the group gained significant attention from their early career.

Explosions in the Sky

Explosions in the Sky is an American instrumental post-rock band from Texas. The band has garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their cinematic, elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals, what they refer to as "cathartic mini-symphonies," and their enthusiastic and emotional live shows.

Sigur Rós

Sigur Rós is an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical, and minimalist elements. The band is known for its ethereal sound and lead singer Jónsi Birgisson's falsetto voice. In January 2010, the band announced that they will be on hiatus until further notice in order to pursue solo careers and to spend time with their families.

Pelican

Pelican is a four-piece rock band from Chicago who have relocated to Los Angeles. The band is known for its dense combinations of different melodies and extended track lengths. Its distinctive sound draws from stoner rock, doom metal, post-rock, and other influences. Larry Herweg, Trevor de Brauw, and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec also make up three-quarters of the band Tusk.
